Rainy Season

Rainy Season has officially arrived. After the middle of March all the way through to November, its quite normal to get some rain showers. It tends to be heavy but fast moving and short lasting. There are often evening thunderstorms.

Rainy Season in Krabi is great though. As long as you are prepared and a little bit flexible with your planning, you can get to enjoy everything looking fresh and clean with far less other tourists around.

Most of the early in the year rain periods tend to be late in the afternoon or early evening and can be quite big storms with lots of thunder and lightning and very heavy rain. However, then tend to pass by quite quickly and be very local. If you do get caught in the rain its usually best to get under some shelter quckly and wait it out. No one will mind if you shelter outside a shop or a house.

The middle months of July and August tend to be quite good, some very heavy showers, but also long periods of beautiful sunny days.

Perhaps the worst time is mid September when its not so unusual to have two or even three days of cloudy skies with not so heavy, but longer spells of rain. But, thats just been the pattern over the last couple of years and could (and probably will) be totally different next year.

These are the tropics though so, some days it will be raining. Be prepared with a raincoat, just a cheap plastic poncho is fine. Secondly, be flexible and a little bit more patient, when there is rain around hotel pickups can be a bit delayed while the operators evaluate the conditions. They leave the decision as late as possible as things can change very quickly.

Most tours will go ahead if it is just raining a little or if it looks like it will pass quickly. Tours are cancelled if there is any danger. The tour operators do take these decisions, they know the conditions best through experience and most of the time they get it right. Their decision is final. If you think it is going to rain and would like to cancel, you must do so by 4:00pm the day before a trip to guarantee full refund.

Rainy Season can be great in Krabi. It doesn't rain every day and even when it does, its rare to rain all day. During high season, some of the Islands can be very busy, so it can be a fantastic experience in rainy season where the are less tourists at the popular places like the 4 Islands and Phi Phi.

By the end of dry season, things are looking a bit tired and dusty and it just takes a few rain showers to make everything look fresh and clean again.
