Krabi's Ao Thalane or Thalane Bay is one of the most beautiful mangrove forests in the whole of Thailand.
The famous Karst mountains provide the backdrop for this area with its complex network of channels that meander through the dense mangrove.
The area is full of hidden gems. Krabi Kayaking tours are a great way to just cool down for a day and enjoy leisurely paddling around. The excercise is not really strenuous and even young kids enjoy it.
Late afternooon is a really beautiful time in the mangroves, all the animal residents are just coming out after the heat of the day and all the day kayakers have gone home creating a really intimate atmosphere.
Everyone has a life jacket on at all times. Kayaks are 3 seat kayaks. We use them as 2 seat kayaks, but if you have a child with you, then they can sit in the 3rd seat in the middle.
We can provide paddlers for an additional fee.
Although the kayaking is still fun at low tide and there are plenty of places to go, it is best at high tide when more of the mangrove system is open to explore. Please check our tide table or just ask us.
Group size is normally small with between 4 and 10 guests on most days.
The kayak center at Thalane Bay is about 40 minutes drive from Aonang. The transport is by songthaew which is a pickup truck with roof on the back and bench seating for up to 12 people. The journey along the coast section is beautiful with amazing glimpses of the famous Bay.
The kayak center is used by a community of operators who share the facilities, kayak storage and lifejackets. There are a variety of sizes and styles of life jackets. If the one you are given does not fit right, feel free to ask for another. You are also given a drybag to borrow for the trip to put all your valuables.
At the kayak center, you will be given a brief instruction on how to use the paddle and then its straight into the kayak. The first 15 minutes is paddling across the estuary, its quite calm and easy paddling and the perfect opportunity to get into the swing of steering and paddling.
Across the estuary, there are lots of entrances into the mangroves and the one taken will depend on the time of day. At low tides, you may need to paddle along the coast for a few extra minutes to reach the main entrance.
Thalane Bay is a fabulous place for kayaking. This sunset trip involves the least amount of time on the water, about 1.5 hours, so if you are worried about getting tired or kids getting restless, then this could be a great option. You can also just take the sunset kayak with no BBQ.
With most of the kayaking tours, you do your Kayaking and then go back to your hotel. This is the difference.
With this tour, straight after your paddle around the mangroves, you will be transported just a couple of minutes a nearby restaurant and you'll enjoy a bbq cooked just for you.
The normal menu is seafood with some prawns/shrimp, fish, chicken and vegetables on sticks and a good helping of freshly cooked rice. If you have any special requests though, please just ask and we'll be happy to check if its possible.
There are toilets and washing facilities and a ready supply of cool beer and soft drinks available for purchase.
