Elephants are awesome. Get upclose and personal with one of the world's largest animals.
Elephants have been a part of Krabi's history for longer than tourism. Krabi itself started life as a Camp to catch wild elephants and put them to work in the towns on the East Coast and Bangkok. Elephants were used like modern tractors and in some inaccessible places, they still are used for dragging logs. They were also used in wars and were and still are highly revered.
Your Krabi elephant trek begins when you arrive at the Elephant Camp and get to meet your elephant. If this is the first time you have seen an elephant really close up, take the time to take in the sheer scale of the animals, they are massive. But, even though they are so big, you can instantly sense just how gentle these giants are.
You'll get to really experience just how delicately these massive creatures pick their way along the rainforest trail. An elephant trek will be an experience you really will remember. The elephants are well cared for and well fed at this elephant trekking camp.
Travel by elephant is a great way to travel without disturbing the wildlife and birds and you'll get to see and hear more than you would with any other form of transport.
Most of the elephants used on the tours are aged between twenty and fourty years old and all of them have been around people for most of their lives and are completely comfortable around us.
The seats themselves are really quite comfortable and on more than one occcasion, the comfort, the silence and the gentle rocking motion has meant I have had to resist the urge to fall asleep!
The guide will normally ride on the elephants shoulders. If you like you can even have a go at driving.
You ride on a saddle thats well strapped to the elephants back in time honoured fashion. The seats are lightweight but very sturdy. To get on, there is a special platform so its an easy step on and step off.The seats accomodate two large adults and one child comfortably.
Once mounted, you'll take a trek through the coconut, rubber and oil palms and unspoiled jungle of Krabi against the backdrop of the magical Karst mountains.
After the trip, you dismount and then can go into the small restaurant area. Here you can have a drink and then the elephants will be brought along and you'll be given some snacks to hand out to them. They love cucumber, pineapple and bananas the best. Just hold out your hand and you'll soon find a trunk delicately taking it from your hand.
If you are trekking in the late afternoon, you may be able to stick around and watch them having their evening bath.
Some people worry that elephant rides like this are taking advantage of elephants. but as long as they are well cared for, then this is not such a bad life for them, they are loved, well fed, excercised and carrying us around is not so hard for them. The more people come into contact with elephants in an environment like this, the more people will come to appreciate just how amazing they are and will help to encourage a positive attitude towards them to help them keep a place in the future.
Young kids are fine with elephants, we took our kids for their first ride when they were about two years old and since then its one of their favorite weekend activities to visit the elephants and give them a few peanuts.
